发展历史：
虹口足球场，是在具有16年光荣历史的虹口体育场原址上建造的以专业足球场为主的多功能综合性体育活动场所，于一九九八年二月二十二日动工，一九九九年二月二十二日落成，同年三月十四日正式启用。是全国第一家专业足球场，也是中国足球超级联赛（原甲A联赛）上海申花足球俱乐部主场。虹口足球场重建项目经过国际方案竞选招投标，由日本RIA设计事务所策划，上海建筑设计研究院深化方案，并负责施工设计。足球场的整体结构庞大，不设伸缩缝或沉降缝，整体设计考虑温度应力及整体变形；足球场的天然划坪采用地加温和强排水循环灌溉等国外先进草皮养扩技术与设备；足球场项部巨大的椭圆形开口，使场内草地的日照时间最大限度地得以保障，同时保持空气的流动。　合理的建筑结构和灵活的空间处理，确保了观众席能保持一览无遗的良好视线。虹口足球场东与鲁迅公园毗邻，西与高架轻轨明珠三号线东站相连，掩映在绿树丛中，与周围幽雅的人文环境融于一体。整个足球场占面积为5.6公顷，总建筑面积72557平方米，观众席位35000个，包厢47个，另有贵宾用房3045平方米，开发经营用房11840平方米。虹口足球场除了可举行高水准国际国内足球比赛外，还设有室内游泳池、乒乓房、桌球房、足球射门训练场等全方位的体育娱乐设施，以及相配套的餐厅、美容桑拿、商场等现代化设施。

主要战绩：
虹口足球场建成以来，出色承担了全国足球甲A联赛申花队主场的所有比赛，成功承办了A3冠军杯足球赛、四国邀请赛及各类商业性的国际、国内赛事，并连续几年被上海市体育局授予“中超联赛最佳赛场”称号、全国足球联赛（上海赛区）组委会颁发的“中国足球协会超级联赛（上海赛场申花主场）竞赛工作优秀奖”。

改建项目：
2007年，因举办女足世界杯，虹口足球场进行了全面的场馆改建，分别对主体场馆、配套建筑、整体环境进行了全新的改造，更新了球场的草坪、大屏幕、技术照明、钢结构、以及广播、空调、消防、监控、电力等所有配套系统。球场的广场重新铺设了地下配套设施及地面，更虹口足球场新了泛光照明和标识系统，重建了环路车道，调整了环境绿化和道路配置环境照明。场馆建筑主体外立面玻璃幕墙和钻石面幕墙通过更换和清洗后，配置了迷人色彩的灯光系统，使球场的外立面焕然一新，犹如一颗五彩钻石，夺目耀眼。
