The New York Red Bulls have inked Homegrown midfielder Sean Davis to a contract extension, a source with knowledge of the deal told MLSsoccer.com.

The 25-year-old signed a new deal that includes three guaranteed seasons and a one-year option. The deal will keep him under the Red Bulls control through the 2021 season.

The Red Bulls declined to comment.

A source previously told MLSsoccer.com that Davis had drawn interest from several clubs in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga, however the Red Bulls were able to do what coach Jesse Marsch said in March he hoped to do: commit to their Homegrown player in the long term.

Specific details of the deal were not immediately clear, but Davis will see a solid raise above the $127,500 he made last season with the Red Bulls. Davis signed a Homegrown contract in 2014 that was set to expire at the end of this season. The new contract will not reach the maximum budget charge that would require Targeted Allocation Money.

Davis established himself as a starter with New York last season after the Red Bulls traded Dax McCarty to the Chicago Fire. Davis started 21 of 27 games in the regular season in 2017, scoring two goals and adding four assists.

Davis has impressed as an integral part of the Red Bulls’ starting group this year. He has started three of four games played this season, with two assists. He also started five of RBNY's six Concacaf Champions League matches this season, scoring one goal, as New York made a run to the semifinals before being eliminated by Chivas de Guadalajara.

In four seasons, Davis has started 39 of 66 games with four goals and 10 assists. He also had one assist in three playoff games last season with New York.

The Holmdel, N.J. native was a four-year standout at Duke before signing his Homegrown deal with the Red Bulls and was the 2014 ACC Midfielder of the Year. Despite his Homegrown status, Davis already takes up a senior roster slot for the Red Bulls, so his new deal will add more salary against the Red Bulls’ cap.

The Red Bulls travel to Los Angeles to take on the Galaxy on Saturday (10:30 pm ET | Full TV & streaming info)
